Plastic Acid Orchestra and Maria in The Shower (Feb 25)

On Feb 25 the Vogue Theatre will come alive with an exquisite fusion of modern folk and rock orchestral sounds. Experience two of Vancouver's most unique acts, Plastic Acid Orchestra intertwined with Maria in the Shower for a bold new symphonic journey.

Maria in the Shower is Vancouver's legendary folk cabaret band - wandering minstrels, entertainers cut from old cloth, storytellers traveling often and gathering tales as they go. You will find them anywhere good people and good music gather - festivals, concert halls, parlours, community halls, house concerts, or simply in the street.

Musical Director, Bryan Deans, leads Plastic Acid Orchestra, a full symphony featuring some of Canada's most promising young composers creating an epic contemporary, rock-infused symphonic world. Designed to cut down barriers between musical genres and bring orchestral music to a wide and diverse audience.

The two-act show will combine Plastic Acid's cutting-edge instrumental orchestra and Maria in the Shower's folk cabaret for a dynamic collaboration that will move you in ways an orchestra has never moved you before!

Buy Tickets

Mac Miller (Mar 4)

Presale Jan 18 2012 10am-Jan 19 2012

Onsale Jan 20 10am

Rising hip hop star, Mac Miller returns to Vancouver for two headlining performances, including an all ages show at the Vogue Theatre on March 4th and a 19 + show at the Commodore Ballroom on March 5th.

At 19-years-old, Malcolm “Mac Miller” McCormick has gone from a local sensation to selling out venues across the United States and Canada. A multi-talented musician with a distinct Golden Era delivery, a great ear for instrumentals, and a positive message, Mac has been focused on paving his own path in music.

Musically gifted, Mac had taught himself to play piano, drums, guitar and bass by the age of six. Influenced by artists such as Big L, Lauryn Hill, The Beastie Boys, Outkast, and A Tribe Called Quest, he began cultivating his own art of rhyme and started to develop a reputation for delivering jaw-dropping freestyles in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.

By 2009 Mac had released his first two recording projects, “The Jukebox” and “The High Life,” generating a buzz both in the streets and across the Internet. By 2010, Mac’s musical abilities became undeniable. After signing with independent record label Rostrum Records, Mac released his debut album “K.I.D.S.” The album, which features his songs, “Knock Knock” and “Nikes On My Feet,” quickly grew in popularity with his fans on iTunes and on YouTube, where his videos have received over 20 million views.

With Mac’s recent successes he has received acclaim from his large fan base as well as industry publications. His music is a mainstay on popular Hip Hop sites such as Nahright, Rapradar, and TheSmokingSection. Mac was also featured in XXL Magazine’s coveted Show and Prove section, and has been called “The Steel City’s Newest Rap Posterboy,” by Complex Magazine.

The Source Magazine says “The sky is the limit for this 19 year old Pittsburgh native,” while HipHopDx labeled Mac as “The Steel City’s next superstar.” Mac was featured on the cover of XXL Magazine’s coveted Top Freshman in January 2011. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says “Miller’s skillful rhymes, humorous themes and upbeat demeanor are catching the nation by storm.” Complex Magazine calls Miller “The Steel City’s newest rap posterboy.” while URB Magazine calls Mac “a young emcee who is the real thing.” Mac’s music is also a mainstay on popular hip-hop sites such as Nahright, 2dopeboyz, Rapradar, TheSmokingSection, Allhiphop, and Illroots.

Mac’s greatest strength though could be his ability to shine in front of the camera. Soon after signing to Rostrum, Miller was thrust onto several national radio shows for interviews and impromptu freestyles, which have now become Youtube viral video classics. To coincide with his debut Rostrum free albums “K.I.D.S.” and “Best Day Ever” Mac continued to team up with hometown filmmaker/videographer Rex Arrow Films. Mac’s videos have now surpassed 165 million hits on www.youtube.com/treejtv, including 6 with 15 million plus views a piece. The success of his early street buzz and social media dominance have now transitioned Mac to sold out shows across the world with The Incredibly Dope Tour upstreaming to the internationally sold out Blue Slide Park Tour with almost 200,000 tickets sold in the past year.

The year 2011 also showcased Mac’s selling potential as his debut Rostrum EP, “On and On and Beyond,” sold over 60,000 copies digitally alone. Mac has also sold over a million singles total with little to no radio airplay. His debut LP “Blue Slide Park” already reached #3 overall on the iTunes Albums Chart just from pre-orders. .
				Buy Tickets

This is THE place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

CelticFest Vancouver 2012 is thrilled to present the 6th anniversary concert of a band that was created on the stage at CelticFest 2006 – and has since gone on to international stardom! Delhi 2 Dublin returns to celebrate their birthday at the BIG St. Pat’s Night Out! Opening the concert is Luxembourg’s Dream Catcher.

Who knew back in 2006 that an experimental one-off live concert collaboration put together by CelticFest’s former artistic director, Dugg Simpson, would serve as the birth of an international phenomenon? That concert was called Delhi to Dublin, and was so well-received that requests for more led to the official formation of the band. Six years on, they are one of Canada’s hippest and most talked-about groups, performing in major venues around the globe. Their kick-ass fiddle players rock out with a kilt-wearing Korean and two electrifying Bhangra percussionist, fronted by a vocalist who looks like he would be equally at home in a Bollywood music video.

Luxembourg’s Dream Catcher opens. Their high-energy multilingual songs (in English, French and Luxembourgish) cover a range of styles, from English pop to Celtic/French chanson. The band wows crowds wherever they perform.

Known as the “United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”, Delhi 2 Dublin’s spectacular mash-up of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub, Reggae and Electronica with global rhythms and club beats will set the stage aflame. This concert is sure to be the hottest St. Patrick's Day ticket in town!

99.3 THE FOX AND THE GEORGIA STRAIGHT PRESENT
KASABIAN
WITH GUESTS
MONDAY, APRIL 9TH, 2012
Doors: 6:30PM Show: 7:30PM

Tickets also available at Vogue Theatre Box Office and Charge by Phone 604-569-1144

**GENERAL ADMISSION SEATING / ALL AGES**

Sure to become one of the most eagerly anticipated shows of 2012, Kasabian return to Vancouver on April 9, unleashing a fury of hits from their latest album Velociraptor! alongside steady favourites.

The follow-up to the acclaimed West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, the new album was recorded in Leicester, UK and mixed in San Francisco. Written and produced by Kasabian’s own Sergio Pizzorno, ‘Velociraptor!’ is a major leap forward from Britain’s biggest band.

NME called the first single “Switchblade Smiles” as “a rumbling, black cloud of techno intensity, probably the heaviest tune they’ve ever done, and might well be their best”.

As well as providing the new decade with its first de facto festival anthem with top three single 'Fire', West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum also brought some impressive mantelpiece clutter. Voted Best Album by Q and nominated for the Mercury Prize, the band also won Best British Group at The Brits, Best Album at the NME Awards and a host of other nominations. "The fact that we got kind of big off that record is amazing," says Serge. "West Ryder was our Ogden's Nut Gone Flake. Everything about it was perfect. But we've done that now and it's time to move on. We've upped the stakes."

If WRPLA saw Kasabian emerging from a cosmic swamp of influences with their own identity, Velociraptor! is the same beast fully grown. It's the sound of a band who have absorbed the lessons of eighteen months playing stadiums and festival main stages and put them into practice. "The success of West Ryder proved that people don't want to be fed the same line all the time," says Serge.

“The aim was to make a modern classic," says Serge in conclusion. "One that people can take to their hearts and sing along to. It's been fifteen or sixteen years since the last truly classic album, but I think we've done it."

The best band in Britain have made their best album yet. One that's perfect for house parties and headline slots; bed-sits and the Budokan. And 24-hour jukeboxes. And, as even the T-Rex discovered, opposition is futile.
				Buy Tickets

Joel Plaskett Emergency (Apr 14)

Canada has produced some of the world’s most enduring songwriters and Joel Plaskett is being hailed as one of the best. Joel’s most recent Juno Award winning release, Three, was named Adult Alternative Album on the Year (2010).

Three is a masterpiece 3 disc collection featuring an eclectic blend of styles, ranging from drum-machine rock ‘n’ roll, to stripped-down acoustic folk, to a deep-country vibe and rollicking pop. A songwriter’s holy trinity – Three marked another landmark in the career of this great Canadian songwriter.

“Three listens in — and it becomes evident that Plaskett has written and recorded what could very well be the album of his career.” Vancouver Sun

Since spending his teenaged years recording and touring with Halifax indie upstarts Thrush Hermit, Plaskett has been writing his own story. After releasing two critically acclaimed albums – In Need of Medical Attention (1999) and Down at the Khyber (2001) – independently, Joel signed to Maple Music Recordings for the release of 2003’s Truthfully Truthfully, a rock tour de force with his band, The Emergency. That record scored with critics and fans alike and truly put Plaskett on the national radar once and for all. Truthfully Truthfully was nominated for a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year and won an East Coast Music Award for Rock Recording of the Year.

During a summer break from touring in 2004, Joel responded to a longtime fan’s offer of recording time at a home studio in Mesa, Arizona. The results of that journey are on Plaskett’s MapleMusic effort, a solo album called La De Da. The album is “solo” in the sense that Joel plays all the instruments, but it’s by no means a simple acoustic project. It also isn’t a permanent move away from his work with The Emergency. Rather, it was the mark of an artist at home with his instincts and his creative muse and one that’s willing to follow fearlessly where those imperatives lead. La De Da attracted attention at regional and national media and the hit single “Happen Now” topped the Canadian campus music chart for months running.

Joel has toured extensively both solo and with The Emergency, to sold-out clubs, theatres and headlining festivals throughout Canada, the United States and Australia, on the heels of great Canadian success with his Make A Little Noise DVD & EP (2006) and Ashtray Rock (2007). Make A Little Noise spawned an infectiously catchy hit single, “Nowhere With You,” that landed Plaskett on the Top 10 at hot Adult Contemporary (AC) radio. He also garnered three 2007 East Coast Music Awards wins for “Nowhere With You,” DVD for Make A Little Noise, and Songwriter of the Year. Ashtray Rock was nominated for the high profile Polaris Music Prize award, and earned Plaskett and his band all six of the 2008 “of the year” ECMAs for which he, and they, were nominated: Recording, Group Recording, Single (for “Fashionable People,” another hit song), Video (also for “Fashionable People”), Rock Recording, and Songwriter. Topping that off was Joel’s Juno Award nomination for Songwriter of the Year and his placement as First Place Winner in the 2008 Great American Song Contest and the Billboard World Song Contest for his single “Fashionable People” (in the Pop Category).

Shane Koyczan & The Short Long Story (Apr 21)

On Sale Saturday February 4th at 10:00AM

Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long

With self described "Experimental Acoustic Folk" music by The Short Story Long, Shane moves from subdued, deep, sad love poetry to power chord hip-hop. He brings enormous vitality and virtuosity to every performance. His warmth, wit and sincerity are a hit with crowds and his lyricism inspires all who listen.

Shane Koyczan is one of the world’s premier spoken word performers. His performance at the 2010 Olympic Opening Ceremonies brought the 55,000 seat house to their feet with his tear-jerking homage to Canada "We Are More". The Guardian (UK) and the Globe and Mail (Canada) hailed his book, Visiting Hours, as a Book of the Year Selection. His second book, Stickboy, is a novel in verse. Written for anyone who has ever been a child, Stickboy continues to be hailed by teachers, academics, and mental health experts alike for its deft handling of the subject of bullying. Shane’s third book, Our Deathbeds Will Be Thirsty, released in 2012, proves once again to be an outstanding addition to an amazing repertoire.

Now the multi award-winning spoken word performer breathes life into the new genre of talk rock with his band The Short Story Long: a group whose musical range stretches from folk to funk, from ambient to rock. Their sound showcases a blend of original music and Shane Koyczan’s remarkable performance poetry. Along with Koyczan, the group has created a whole new style of song/verse. This is Talk-Rock. This is something new. This is worth checking out. Winning “Best New Artist” at the BC Interior Music Awards in 2009, receiving standing ovations at festivals across Canada, and selling out theatres and cafés alike, the band is turning heads on the Canadian independent music scene. Their soon-to-be released album ‘Remembrance Year,’ (due out on March 16th, 2012) has already garnered acclaim from music reviewers and fans alike.

"Listening to 'My Darling Sara' (I left the ignition on, long after I'd parked, to hear the end of that one)… it all sounds like something's coming - a sound everyone asks for.”
- Gordon Downie of The Tragically Hip

Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long is:
Shane Koyczan – Poetry & Vocals
Maiya Robbie – Guitar & Vocals
Olivia Mennell – Keyboard & Vocals
Jesse Lee – Stand Up Bass
Jordie Robinson - Cello

				Buy Tickets

Said the Whale (May 3)

On Sale January 21st, 2012 at 10:00AM

Said The Whale formed in 2007 as a collaboration between songwriters Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft. The pair's debut EP, Taking Abalonia, featured sunny west coast indie pop, with breezy harmonies, shimmering guitars, and lyrical tributes to their home city of Vancouver. In 2008, the album was rereleased as Howe Sounds/Talking Abalonia, featuring seven additional tracks that stretched the band's stylistic palate to include bubblegum folk "The Light Is You", thundering hard rock "Last Tree Standing" and gentle ukulele ballads "The Real of It".

After several personnel changes, the group settled upon a five-piece lineup that included bassist Peter Carruthers, drummer Spencer Schoening, and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown. The quintet embarked upon a rigorous touring schedule, crossing Canada numerous times and landing high profile gigs at V-Fest 2008 in Calgary and the nationally televised Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill.

The group is now poised to take the next step with the release of its latest single, "Camilo (The Magician)." With its gritty powerchords and sunny powerpop chorus, the single has already been dubbed the "song of the summer" by Grant Lawrence of CBC Radio 3. Produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, The New Pornographers, Mother Mother) and Tom Dobrzanski (Hey Ocean!, The Zolas), it will appear on the group's sophomore album, Islands Disappear, due for release on October 13 via Upper Management/EMI. Unlike the west coast focus of previous releases, the new album draws on the experience of driving across Canada, from the van breaking down in Manitoba "Dear Elkhorn" to camping in Alberta "Emerald Lake, AB". With stylistic forays that include backwoods folk "False Creek Change" and danceable ukulele/glockenspiel rave-ups "Goodnight Moon", it's the sound of a band coming into its own, delivering on the promise of its early recordings.

Arkells and The Maine (Jun 1)

After relentlessly touring their debut record Jackson Square, which garnered the band a top 10 Canadian rock radio hit with 'Oh, the Boss is Coming!" and a Juno Award for 'New Band of the Year", the Arkells retreated to the legendary Bathouse Studios in Kingston, Ontario to record their sophomore record, Michigan Left. Looking to capture their energetic live show without compromise, the band combined the spontaneity of live-off-the-floor recordings with more complex sonic details made possible by the meticulous production work of Arkells keyboardist Dan Griffin. While Michigan Left combines the bombast of Bruce Springsteen, the infectious 80's R&B sounds of Hall & Oates and the delicate studio touches of Spoon, the sound that results is undeniably that of the Arkells. In the short time since its release on October 18th, 2011, the first single 'Whistleblower' has already broken the top ten at Canadian rock radio, with the second single 'Michigan Left' to be serviced to radio in early 2012.

In the fall of 2011, the Arkells embarked on a Canadian tour in support of Michigan Left that culminated in a sold-out performance at the Sound Academy in Toronto, where the band was joined on stage by Kathleen Edwards and members of Born Ruffians and Tokyo Police Club. On December 7th of 2011, the Arkells were named "best live act" by CBC Radio 3 for their foot stomping, sing-along inducing live performances - an experience they will bring to the 2012 SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, and then across America when they embark on a cross-country tour with rock outfit The Maine.

Hailing from Tempe, AZ, The Maine have been writing and recording and touring nonstop since they were barely out of high school. Their songs have garnered over 77 million plays on MySpace and they have sold more 113k albums, 674k digital singles and racked up 1.5 million views on YouTube. The five-piece has been a part of multiple consecutive sold out tours and was a marquee artist on Van’s Warped Tour.

Signed to a major record label just a few years after forming, The Maine released their most highly recognized album to date, Pioneer in late 2011. After countless tours alongside Boys Like Girls, All Time Low, appearances on Warped Tour and Bamboozle, and three full length albums, the band is reaching its stride with more a more broad and mature sound. The new album continues to get great reviews and live show is not to be missed.

PATRICK WATSON ANNOUNCES TOUR IN SUPPORT OF ADVENTURES IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

Patrick Watson's Adventures in Your Own Backyard is set for release by Secret City Records on April 17 in Canada, in conjunction with Domino for the rest of the world. As previously announced, Patrick and his band will play a headlining performance at SXSW and select dates with Andrew Bird in the USA in May. Now, we are thrilled to share the news of Patrick’s extensive touring plans for the spring and summer, including Canadian dates in Toronto and Vancouver. Joining Patrick (piano) in recreating his elegant songs live will be Mishka Stein (bassist), Simon Angell (guitar), Robbie Kuster (drums), and Mélanie Bélair (Violin).

LISTEN TO PATRICK WATSON’S “INTO GIANTS” - www.patrickwatson.net

“both thoroughly accessible and fearlessly eccentric: irregular stanzas, unexpected instrumental interludes, a dramatic tempo change – all of which will leave you trying to sing along before you know any of the words.” – Toronto Star

“’Into Giants’ is a gorgeous journey into a land of angelic singing, trumpet solos and string arrangements. The song has a delightful, wide-eyed exuberance.” – Boing Boing

Adventures In Your Own Backyard, the fourth full-length effort from Patrick Watson, was recorded in Montreal after a grueling five-year run that saw Patrick and his band tour the world in support of two critically-acclaimed and successful albums, including the Polaris Music Prize-winning Close To Paradise.

The album’s title is a nod to both Watson’s attempt to make a more “personal, humble” record—and to the fact that it was recorded almost entirely in his apartment in Montreal. By contrast, both Close to Paradise and especially 2009’s Wooden Arms were recorded over long periods of time, in many different locations around the globe. The result is an album that is still ripe with the touchstones one has come to expect from Patrick Watson and his collaborators, but permeated with a greater sense of patience, and confidence.

Wayne Shorter Quartet featuring Brian Blade, John Patitucci and Danilo Perez plus special guests Brad Turner Quartet Tuesday, June 26 Show: 9pm Doors: 8pm Vogue Theatre Tickets Advance $55 + SC

Legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter is widely acknowledged to be jazz's greatest living composer, possessed of a rare combination of technical mastery and boundless creative energy. His output as a leader for Blue Note records, as well as his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and the second classic Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s, may arguably be the finest and most productive ten-year stretch in the history of music. In the '70s he co-led Weather Report, a unit that helped define the fusion movement of the era. He then went on to collaborate with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Santana, Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan. Today, with pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade he leads an acoustic powerhouse band that critics and fans are calling “the best small group in jazz.” http://www.wayneshortermusic.com/

Destroyer (Jun 29)

TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival Presents:

Jun 29th, 9:00PM (Doors at 8:00PM)

Destroyer plus special guests Inhabitants Friday, June 29 Show: 9pm Doors: 8pm Vogue Theatre Tickets Advance $25 + SC

Indie rock’s idiosyncratic and sometimes inscrutable crown prince, Dan Bejar, has transformed his critically-acclaimed Destroyer project once again, this time letting his trademark lyricism take a back seat to extended smooth grooves, reverb-drenched horn solos and yacht-invoking synth pads. The Polaris Music Prize nominated album Kaputt sees Bejar, the unorthodox singer/songwriter, standing back and letting the musical interplay have a far more significant role than on any previous releases. Bejar’s relationship to the confident soft rock sonics of his band evokes a wise and winking outsider poet, wandering the neon streets of a vibrant cosmopolitan city, bemused, a bit detached, but enthralled by the pulse of the night. http://www.destroyersongs.com/

Robert Randolph & Family Band (Jun 30)

Robert Randolph & The Family Band plus special guests Rich Hope & His Evil Doers Saturday, June 30 Show: 9pm Doors: 8pm Vogue Theatre Tickets Advance $40 + SC

Randolph’s latest album—the T Bone Burnett-produced “We Walk this Road”—is a celebration of African-American music of the past one hundred years, from gospel to early blues, to good old rock and roll. Named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time, Robert Randolph learned to play the pedal steel (aka “Sacred Steel”) in Church, and this upbringing is reflected in his musical mission to bridge generations and uplift audiences. Flying without a set list, an onstage dance party always on the verge of outbreak, Robert Randolph and the Family Band deliver their message of hope with virtuosic playing and a wickedly funky beat. http://www.robertrandolph.net/
