A Politics of the Street

Eminent philosopher, literary critic and political activist.

What is happening when bodies amass in the public square, the university commons, and the street, or when they gather for episodic "occupations"? It seems we are in the midst of a new form of politics, one that depends upon bodies amassed and moving together, holding firm, sitting still, and even sleeping in public. Whether resistance in the streets of Vancouver, Madrid, or Athens, the coming together of bodies in coordinated protest worldwide takes new forms, even as it calls upon more classical ideals of public action. Can we say that this is a new politics of the body? This lecture will pursue the question: has contemporary politics taken a bodily turn? Or have street actions become so media-driven that we are witnessing a disembodiment of the public sphere? What role does the body play in a politics of the street?

Leighton Meester & Check In The Dark (May 30)

Leighton Meester

Best known for her roles as “Blair Waldorf” on TV’s Gossip Girl and “Chiles Stanton” opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in the hit film Country Strong, Leighton Meester makes her debut musical performance in Vancouver with the band Check in the Dark (CITD) on May 30 at the Vogue Theatre.

Leighton’s first single “Somebody to Love” featured R&B singer Robin Thicke and was released in 2009, since then she has worked with Lil Wayne (Make It Rain), Cobra Starship (Good Girls Go Bad) and Stephen Jerzak (She Said). For her 2010 country drama film Country Strong, she recorded a cover of Rascal Flatts’ "Words I Couldn't Say" as well as "A Little Bit Stronger" by Sara Evans featured on the film's soundtrack; plus a promotional single titled "Summer Girl"; and a duet with Garrett Hedlund titled "Give In To Me".

Leighton Meester and CITD have performed sold out shows in Hollywood at the World Famous Trobadour and The Hotel Café and teamed up in the recording and writing of Leighton’s latest album.

Check In The Dark

Check in the Dark formed in Hollywood CA , and have been creating original music and playing the LA scene and the southwest area of the country. They have performed at the Sunset Strip’s Viper Room, Roxy Theater, The Derby and recently sold out The Troubadour opening for, and supporting as her backing band, music and film star Leighton Meester. Members of the band have shared the stage with names such as John Scofield, Oteil Burbridge, Ziggy Marley, Mike Clark, Everlast, OPM, The Dave Wood Trio, Charles Evans and the Language Of, Dakota, Ray’s Music Exchange, and many others.

Arkells and The Maine (Jun 1)

After relentlessly touring their debut record Jackson Square, which garnered the band a top 10 Canadian rock radio hit with 'Oh, the Boss is Coming!" and a Juno Award for 'New Band of the Year", the Arkells retreated to the legendary Bathouse Studios in Kingston, Ontario to record their sophomore record, Michigan Left. Looking to capture their energetic live show without compromise, the band combined the spontaneity of live-off-the-floor recordings with more complex sonic details made possible by the meticulous production work of Arkells keyboardist Dan Griffin. While Michigan Left combines the bombast of Bruce Springsteen, the infectious 80's R&B sounds of Hall & Oates and the delicate studio touches of Spoon, the sound that results is undeniably that of the Arkells. In the short time since its release on October 18th, 2011, the first single 'Whistleblower' has already broken the top ten at Canadian rock radio, with the second single 'Michigan Left' to be serviced to radio in early 2012.

In the fall of 2011, the Arkells embarked on a Canadian tour in support of Michigan Left that culminated in a sold-out performance at the Sound Academy in Toronto, where the band was joined on stage by Kathleen Edwards and members of Born Ruffians and Tokyo Police Club. On December 7th of 2011, the Arkells were named "best live act" by CBC Radio 3 for their foot stomping, sing-along inducing live performances - an experience they will bring to the 2012 SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, and then across America when they embark on a cross-country tour with rock outfit The Maine.

Hailing from Tempe, AZ, The Maine have been writing and recording and touring nonstop since they were barely out of high school. Their songs have garnered over 77 million plays on MySpace and they have sold more 113k albums, 674k digital singles and racked up 1.5 million views on YouTube. The five-piece has been a part of multiple consecutive sold out tours and was a marquee artist on Van’s Warped Tour.

Signed to a major record label just a few years after forming, The Maine released their most highly recognized album to date, Pioneer in late 2011. After countless tours alongside Boys Like Girls, All Time Low, appearances on Warped Tour and Bamboozle, and three full length albums, the band is reaching its stride with more a more broad and mature sound. The new album continues to get great reviews and live show is not to be missed.

Patrick Watson's Adventures in Your Own Backyard is set for release by Secret City Records on April 17 in Canada, in conjunction with Domino for the rest of the world. As previously announced, Patrick and his band will play a headlining performance at SXSW and select dates with Andrew Bird in the USA in May. Now, we are thrilled to share the news of Patrick’s extensive touring plans for the spring and summer, including Canadian dates in Toronto and Vancouver. Joining Patrick (piano) in recreating his elegant songs live will be Mishka Stein (bassist), Simon Angell (guitar), Robbie Kuster (drums), and Mélanie Bélair (Violin).

Adventures In Your Own Backyard, the fourth full-length effort from Patrick Watson, was recorded in Montreal after a grueling five-year run that saw Patrick and his band tour the world in support of two critically-acclaimed and successful albums, including the Polaris Music Prize-winning Close To Paradise.

The album’s title is a nod to both Watson’s attempt to make a more “personal, humble” record—and to the fact that it was recorded almost entirely in his apartment in Montreal. By contrast, both Close to Paradise and especially 2009’s Wooden Arms were recorded over long periods of time, in many different locations around the globe. The result is an album that is still ripe with the touchstones one has come to expect from Patrick Watson and his collaborators, but permeated with a greater sense of patience, and confidence.

Perryscope Concerts and The Vogue Theatre are proud to present the Shockwave Festival in Vancouver. This all day metal event features death metal forefathers Fear Factory, iconic Canadians Voivod and genre spawning Cattle Decapitation at the The Vogue Theatre on Saturday July 7, 2012.

Metal is not easily dissected, the list of subgenres is extensive and complex. Shockwave has assembled a literal tour de force with twelve bands taking the stage during the day long testament to all things metal. Bands include; Misery Index, Revocation, Havok, Dirge Within, Last Chance to Reason, Vildhjarta, The Browning and Forged in Flame.

Fear Factory entered the metal scene with a crushing debut with 1992’s Soul Of A New Machine. Combining death metal with an industrial influence, Fear Factory’s earliest sound was immediately distinguishable by intense machine-like drumming and dual vocal style, which seemed to effortlessly switch between animalistic growls and clear, operatic tones. Fear Factory had set a new standard in extreme music, a standard they would continue to bear to this very day.

Montreal's Voivod has long been heralded as an innovative and visionary force within the world of extreme music. For more than 25 years, the band has performed heavy metal alchemy by fusing various strains of thrash, punk, hardcore, progressive, and psychedelia to create some of the most engaging, provocative, and, oft times, surprisingly accessible music of their day. Voivod has pushed its musical sci-fi story to the end of infinity and re-emerged, reinvented, and revitalized itself countless times over and remains a respected name in circles where quality music and ideas, not gimmicks and trends, are held in high esteem.

Well over a decade since its inception, Cattle Decapitation has forged its not-so-humble beginnings in veggie gore-grind into one of extreme metal's most relentless forces, encompassing a sound as schizophrenic as their record collections but with a determined lyrical stance resolutely damning the ills of humanity. With countless tours under their belt as well as having influenced the majority of today's rapidly-growing-in-popularity death/grind hopefuls, Cattle Decapitation continue their own brand of spastic gore-drenched grinding death.
